During the period of 1st and 2nd Five-Year Plan, the government mainly invested in the construction of Shenyang as a key industrial base. Over the past half century, incessant transformation and steady progress has seen the establishment of all trades of industrial system, such as automobile, petrochemical, aerospace, pharmacy, construction material, metallurgy, light industry, textile, electronics, coal, and etc. In the past years, local industry has incessantly transfused blood for the nation’s economic development.

　　Modern industry of Shenyang was introduced in the end of Qing Dynasty and was formed during the control of the Republic of China. Since the foundation of new China, the government began to build, transform and extend the local industry, especially mechanical industry. During the period of 1st and 2nd Five-year Plan, the government had invested 14% of total industrial investment in the construction of local industry and 54 key projects were completed. Incessant investment enabled production of urgent products, such as heavy mining equipment, tool machines, forging equipment, pneumatic tools, large-size transformers and the building of first jet plane in China, which is the landmark of domestic aerospace industry and is also the mark of Shenyang as one of the key industrial bases at home, especially one of the key bases of mechanical industry.

　　Technical reformation in 1970s proved to have an effect on local industry of Shenyang, and mechanical industry, such as tool machines, metallurgy, kept up with domestic advanced level. Some brand name products were well known. Take Sino-Czechoslovakian Friendship Factory for example, its product ‘large-size horizontal processing center’ was advanced in world market and sold in Europe and America.

　　Focus in 1980s was on restructuring industry and gaining more profit, and great efforts were made to support large and middle-sized enterprises. These measures resulted in increase of production and enabled the mechanical industry to play a more important part in supporting industry of Shenyang.

　　In order to quicken the restructuring, heavy investment was made in 1990s. Optimization of capital structure required supporting those leading industries like mechanical industry. Reformation was aimed to improve the level of technology and to revitalize this industrial base.

　　---- Pumps: industrial pumps, special pumps, pumps for farming, submersible pumps, etc. Main producers: Shenyang Water Pump Plant, Shenyang Submersible Pumps Plant, etc.

　　---- Special equipment for light industry, textile, grain & oil, foodstuff, commercial and daily use. Main producers: Shenyang Light Industrial Machinery Plant, Shenyang Textile Machinery Plant, etc.

　　Sheyang has now developed into a large, advanced, comprehensive industrial city, which specializes in mechanical industry but has complete sectors of industry. Over a half century of development, mechanical industry has topped other three leading industries. Some products of mechanical industry, such as tool machine, power transmitter and transformer, supplementary equipment of power plant, have played leading roles in domestic market. Thanks to large scale, solid foundation, advanced technology and necessary accessories of local mechanical industry, other industrial areas find it hard to take its place at home. At present, heavy mining machinery, general machinery, etc still dominate in domestic market.

　　Shenyang had glory days on mechanical industry. And now it is making great efforts to bring out the dominance of equipment manufacturing and to regain the vitality in 21st century through hosting China International Equipment Manufacturing Exposition. Shenyang will play a leading part in economic globalization.
